In 1993 Parco naturale delle Alpi Marittime was awarded the The European Diploma of Protected Areas by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. This lends precious support to the efficient management of protected areas of particular importance in Europe. The European Diploma constitutes a useful tool to guide the managing bodies of protected areas in their actions to protect and enhance the territory.
In 2001, after preparing the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism, with nine other protected areas, Alpi Marittime Park was the first area in Italy to receive this award. In order to apply the charter, the Park needs an action plan and an agreed strategy with the local stakeholders, these two tools aim to encourage development of the social and economic fabric in harmony with environmental protection.
The environmental organisation Legambiente has awarded the Park the prestigious Bandiera verde (Green flag) for its achievements over the thirty years since its institution, and in particular for the creation of the "Uomini e Lupi" wolf enclosure.
