Vernante (5 foto)
A friendly village in mid valley, Vernante is the gateway to the upper Vermenagna valley and the short but enchanting Val Grande. Attilio Mussino, the most famous illustrator of Collodi's Pinocchio, spent many years in this little village: today Vernante remembers "Pinocchio's uncle" affectionately with the murals that decorate the houses and the streets of the centre of the village. Another reason for pride in Vernante are the famous vernantìn pocket knives, hand-made by local craftsmen to last a lifetime. If instead of continuing on towards Limone you turn into the Val Grande by car, or better still on foot or mountain bike, you mustn't miss the enchanting hamlet of Palanfré, surrounded by an ancient beech wood. This village was abandoned in the 1970s, but has come back to life recently, with two farming families, a small dairy and a hikers' hostel owned by the Park.
