An exciting and moving visit

Uomini e Lupi Centre

A room in the Uomini e Lupi Wolf Centre (N. Villani/PNAM).

Can people and wolves live together? Alpi Marittime's Wolf Centre rather than supply visitors with an answer, gives them the opportunity to learn about these animals and their behaviour, to have everything they need to form an educated, documented opinion.

The Uomini e Lupi Centre comprises an eight hectare enclosure with wolves Canis lupus italicus living in it. These are animals that could not live in the wild, either because they have had serious accidents, or because they were born in captivity.

In the middle of the area there is a three storey observation tower from which you can see a large part of the enclosure. You have to be very lucky to see a wolf in the wild and encounters are extremely rare, however it must be said that there are no guarantees that you will see the wolves here either. They are more often seen around feeding times, and there are also closed circuit cameras to make it is easier to get a look at them.

To reach the tower you go through a tunnel and experience a presentation of wolves from a biological and behavioural point of view. The enclosure and tunnel are at Casermette, next to the operational headquarters of Alpi Marittime Nature Park, however the Uomini e Lupi Centre has a second visitor centre in Entracque, which deals with the relationship between people and wolves.

Wolf Centre at Casermette
Ligabue, a true story

In the tunnel at Casermette Caterina, who is passionate about wolves and travels the world filming and photographing their way of life, leads visitors in the discovery of the wolves world: their characteristics, social behaviour, hunting strategies. All this is told through a film projected in five settings: the Laboratory, the Library and the Kitchen of this young artist, a Wood, a Mountain refuge. Caterina is an invented character; the story she tells is pure fact, the story of Ligabue a young male who, in 2004, was tracked daily, thanks to a radio collar, as he made his way from the Apennines of Parma to the Maritime Alps.

Visitor Centre in Entracque
Fables, myths, legends

In Entracque the narrator's voice is a story-teller. Here, as at the wolf enclosure there are four rooms where films are projected. Starting in the story tent, which children love, to the bicycle repair shop: it is on a magic bicycle that our story-teller travelled the world to discover legends and myths concerning wolves. He found them in Turkey, Russia, Sweden, Ireland amongst the Mongols and the Native Americans. In the next room the Picture Gallery smugglers, gamekeepers and wolf hunters tell their encounters with wolves, whilst in the Cave there are comments of shepherds, rangers, hikers... The contact with these various characters reveals a moral which may seem obvious: wolves are neither good nor bad, they attack other animals because of its instinct, this is the part they have been given in the great circle of life.
